Techno Acorn

Post by Sword »

Here's a little project "success story" that I've been working on, now and then on and off, for a couple years. I finally got it finished up, until I decide to add/tweak something else with it. It's a 20 some year old Techno Isel benchtop. The extrusions, bellows, and linear rails were ok, but the ballscrews, motors, and controller needed to be replaced. The old 4mm pitch ballscrews were replaced with 5mm ones, linear rails/bearing blocks were soaked cleaned and relubed. The original stepper motors (see pic) were replaced with a set of 439oz Leadshine Hybrids. Original motor cans were saved by 3D printing a different cover to allow for a slightly longer motor and to reuse the DB9 connectors/cables. An UgraCNC 0.8kw square ER16 spindle, paired with a Delta VFD-M, takes the place where a 7518 PC router used to be. A Jtech 7 watt laser attaches magnetically to the front of the 3D printed dust foot. The bellow were reconditioned (cleaned and sprayed with black ink) and the old ribs (missing and torn) were replaced with 3D printed ones. The control box was gutted and refilled with an Acorn 3 and some Leadshine EM556S drives. There are a number of 3D printed parts, dust foot and upper adapter, laser mount, stepper can covers, DB9 covers, prox mounts, cable carrier bracket, XY axis gear spinners and Z axis medallion, Lenovo Tiny stand, on/off and E-stop lables, wire runs with covers, relay mount clip, and the Acorn and DB25 riser.

There's a stacked pair of 24V power supplies, one solely for the Acorn and one for the contactor that powers the main supply (reason being, the voltage drop due to the contactor concerned me a little). There's a 5V LED strip under the gantry that is assigned to the lamp output. Bought the wrong size fan, so since it was a nice one, it was mounted outboard. I planned on using the original DB9 connectors on the back panel, but didn't really have the room for the internal connectors, so cable glands it is. On the inside front wall is a remote plug-in push button remote that was hacked into to solder on a couple of wires so it can be connected to a relay and automatically turn on a fume extractor. I still need to come up with a somewhat quiet dust collection solution of sorts (small cyclone on a small bucket or barrel), and a spoilboard with probably a bunch of threaded inserts.

It's nothing great compared to some of the large undertakings of some of you have taken on, but it's been a fun little basement project and test unit for CNC12 and the Acorn PWM laser version beta testing.

Thanks guys. It wasn't all "love". While trying to shoehorn the new larger longer ballscrews into place (after having them shortened), there was a good amount of "hate" in the air! ;)
