Today I designed and built the drive coupling.
The shaft has a straight spring wire through it that locks if turned clock wise and loads spring tension in the direction of cutting force
down on the tool. This takes the load off the worm gears and loads all the force on the sprag clutch.
All tool changes are in a clock wise direction and 45 degrees each. When the correct tool number is reached the direction reverses
2 degrees. The reverse direction does not rotate the tool it loads the spring in the drive coupling locking everything tight.
The 4 Allen bolts that hold the coupling in, if loosened will allow the turret to free wheel in one direction.
Now that it is finished I have to learn how to program the tool changes and I have no idea how to to do that yet...
Building it may have been the easy part!
I'll ask for help here to try to make this work, I see Marty has done something like this with a stepper

Steve do you have any info you can share on how you did this? I feel sure your methods were as clever & well thought out as the rest of the project. No rush, just when & if you find time.

when I get in my shop I will take pics of the tool I made and my wizard settings.
when I first did it I had to enter settings in manually but now I think the wizard lets you setup.
can you get my settings from my latest report.zip ?

Yep sure can Steve, thanks! A lot of it's Greek at the moment but looks like it'll be a big help when I get back on my lathe project. I been led astray by other projects lately.

The touch off tool i made by pressing a cheap nylon bushing into a aluminum disk and then pressing in a .625 shaft inside.
I marked jaw one on the tool for quick use. skim cut and measure is more accurate.
the red lead goes to an acorn input pin (the number you assign) and the black to 24v ground.
I made the alligator clamps to unplug when not in use.
There are several good videos online for setup :https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=or ... ORM=VRDGAR
