I'm looking to acquire a mill and convert it into a cnc mill. I looking for a machine that can mill an 8" cube as a size reference and am open as to the make and country of origin.
Any ideas?

Re: core-xy kinematics
If on the other hand you attached a tool that doesn't impart stresses on the machine, like a laser, you could probably rig something up.
The other question about core X-Y being supported, no idea.

Re: core-xy kinematics
Note that a 3D printer has virtually no stress and little weight on the head when printing. A CNC machine has a lot of stress during cutting operations. I'd guess that a core X-Y printer wouldn't have the gumption to handle the stresses or even the weight of the router. If it's one used to build con...

Re: Digitize to milling with Rhino and fusion
Anything 2D can be "scanned" with a standard smartphone camera. That example provided by @suntravel would be perfect to digitize with just a photo. The key is to take the photo from as far away as possible with grid paper (I use 10 to the inch paper) as a background, then bring the photo i...

Looks quite beefy. That's a nice machine.

Re: Work holding ideas for a granite bed router
What about the rest of the machine? Now that you'll have a "rock solid" base, is the rest of the machine up to the task?

Re: Work holding ideas for a granite bed router
What do you plan on making with this CNC? What is going to require coolant?

Re: Work holding ideas for a granite bed router
No Risk No Fun  2000rpm 10mm/min 1.5mm peck drill should be ok to start. Depends on the quality of the drill bit and on good flushing No MDF, directly mount a fixture plate 20mm flat milled AW5083 or cast iron If you use a vise, directly mount on granite Uwe If he's running a router, he'll be ...

Re: Work holding ideas for a granite bed router
I'm curious what you're planning on machining on that granite bed? If one of your end mills comes in contact with that material, it's toast. So you'll need a spoil board if for no other reason, to protect your expensive end mills. Most jobs require a cut through to achieve good surface quality on th...

Re: Measuring axis squareness
Another easy way to check for square is to measure the diagonals. Measure corner to opposite corner of the machine and that measurement should be the same. If it isn't you're out of square. An easy way to check the plumbness of the Z is to make a long "Z" indicator. Take a coat hanger or s...
