Poor man's rigid tapping?

I have a 3 axis bed mill with a manual quill. I don't have a spindle encoder, nor do I have the funds at this time for the rigid tapping option for the Centroid control. If the quill were equipped with a glass scale, would it be possible to configure the PLC program when it encounters a G84 command ...

Re: Desired control changes

I also have a 3 axis bed mill. I think having nearly everything disabled until you home is a good idea. So, would you be cool with a machine that has only manual spindle control and jogging available before homing? (I assume yours doesn't have an ATC if the quill is manual, so you could load whateve...

Re: broken tool T1. re-ref tool & T1 measure knee confusion.

I am just starting (FINALLY) to use my retrofitted Prototrak DPM bed mill. It has a #40 taper spindle. Is there a pitfall to touching off the spindle face (no tool loaded) as the reference tool? My reasoning is that I don't necessarily break down every tool between jobs. What happens if on a later j...

Re: CNC manual combo machine

I can offer some observations: I converted a Prototrak DPM bed mill to Centroid control using an ALLIN1DC board. For exactly the same reasons you want to. The MX3 control is archaic and not well suited for running G-code. There is absolutely no problem switching between powered axis control and cran...

Re: Prototrak Knee Mill CNC control system upgrade

That is exactly what I did (modify the original 48t pulleys). I believe I posted up pictures in the build thread I referenced earlier. I'm too far down the road of retaining the DC servos since I built a system around the ALLIN1DC board to switch to AC servos. :( I just hope I can get them tuned sat...

Re: Southwest Industries Prototrak DPM conversion

I have video, but can't seem to post it up. It's in .mp4 format. Am I doing something wrong (likely) or have to convert to a different format?

Re: Southwest Industries Prototrak DPM conversion

Well, so much for getting the servos tuned. :( Went to run a report as requested by popular demand. Then decided to try changing Kd value after re-reading my tuning documentation and notes. Almost gave up and ready to restore the original value (3.000) after lowering it by .25 several times, but whe...

Re: Southwest Industries Prototrak DPM conversion

Marty, you are correct; NOT using the old servo drive. The original Magnetek servos are upfitted with 8000 count encoders and wired directly to the All in One DC. With a digital multimeter, I get a 120 VAC reading at my mains to the mill control (and isn't that the standard for residential single ph...

Re: Southwest Industries Prototrak DPM conversion

I did not get a report with baseline numbers as far as I remember; that would have been about 8 years ago though. I ended up having to shelve the project for a couple years just as my servos were returned with the new encoders installed so it is entirely possible that I was given information that I ...

Re: Southwest Industries Prototrak DPM conversion

Marty, I did send my servos off to Scott, who had offered to do the labor to fit new encoders in exchange for doing some R & D testing. Remember, this was 8 years ago. It is MY fault this project has taken so long; Centroid/AjaxCNC has always been prompt with responses to my queries. That said, ...
