Re: Has anyone converted Bridgeport Vari-drive to fixed ratio?

I had to slot the original motor mounting holes to allow for belt tensioning. Not too bad of a job; 4 recessed holes hold the bolts that keep the end frame on. I pulled the end frame off, took it to work and milled the slots on the Haas VF3 SS. Can't wait until I no longer have to do my "home p...

Re: Has anyone converted Bridgeport Vari-drive to fixed ratio?

Well, since I had some delays due to converting from a step down transformer to direct rectification, I decided to forge ahead with the spindle conversion. I had some parameters I wanted to meet: 5,000 max spindle RPM, and no more than 1.5 times base motor speed (90 hz on the VFD). EDIT--My motor ha...

Re: Southwest Industries Prototrak DPM conversion

Dean, Newark has a screw terminal 12,000uF@350V cap in stock that might work: http://www.newark.com/nichicon/lnc2v123mseh/aluminum-electrolytic-capacitor/dp/27T9721?categoryId=800000005280&searchView=table&iscrfnonsku=false I can't get to my cap to easily measure the to easily measure the t...

Re: Southwest Industries Prototrak DPM conversion

SWI servo drive.jpg I'm pretty confident that I'll be OK with direct rectification. The photo above is of the original SWI Prototrak drive (one for each servo). There's no transformer prior to the bridge rectifier as far as I can tell. I am curious as to the ferrite ring that the yellow and blue ou...

ALLIN1DC 160v to 180v conversion?

What difference is there between the early (160 volt max) ALLIN1 boards vs. the later (180 volt max) boards other than the 3 large capacitors close to the servo motor terminals?

Has anyone converted Bridgeport Vari-drive to fixed ratio?

I'm wondering if anyone has removed their Vari-drive in favor of a fixed ratio pulley system when they are using a VFD? If so, what ratio did you settle on, and what type of belt did you use? (polygroove, vee, timing) Where did you source the components? If you used something other than a timing bel...

Re: Southwest Industries Prototrak DPM conversion

Keith-- here is the report. I have a problem though. I went to temporarily feed the capboard with 120vac line voltage (bypassing the transformer), but I kept the transformer powered on the primary side to provide the 24vac for the E-stop circuit. I did disconnect and tape off the green 83vac output ...

Re: Southwest Industries Prototrak DPM conversion

Keith, Thanks for the reply. When checking my mains voltage, I'm getting 120 volts, not 110, I thought that would be too high. But I assume the Capboard is rated to handle direct rectification, so I am going to temporarily hook directly (bypass the transformer) and see what the actual DC output is. ...

20170210_175211.jpg Not what I wanted to see when homing the machine this afternoon in preparation for some servo tuning. But since I'm no where close to running a job, I let it slide. During my attempt to tune servos (which is going miserably) I discovered WHY that error came up... 20170210_230303...
