Re: Common, -VDC, Chassis Ground?

Usually that will work; however, there is one problem. DC supplies are usually mislabeled. A 24VDC supply is usually labeled +V and -V where +V = +24VDC and -V = 0VDC. If you buy a power supply that has a negative DC voltage, be sure that you know which terminal is 0V. That terminal should be connec...

Re: Acorn STEP/DIR timing requirements

I agree with Keith. Try it out and see what happens. Page 92 has some data on the Interpolation Time Period (60C2h). It states that pulses are collected and buffered during that time period. From what I think I understand from 6.9.2, that time period is 1ms. If you've set the pulse rate to 200,000 s...

Re: Common, -VDC, Chassis Ground?

Welcome to the joys of electrical engineering. Ground is ground. AC ground is zero volts. DC ground is zero volts. There is no difference in the voltage potential. All grounds whose source voltage(s) come from the same panel or sub-panel MUST be zero volts or they are not ground. Different sub-panel...

Re: Common, -VDC, Chassis Ground?

Ground is a common connection. Earth ground, chassis ground, and power supply ground should all be on a common bus (tied together) inside a electronics cabinet. If you have more than one cabinet and if those cabinets are supplied with AC power from different sub-panels, then you DO NOT connect the g...

Re: Motor torque…..do I need more?

The specs on that driver show a maximum of 200,000 pulses per second. Most stepper motors move 1.8-degrees per full step, or 200 steps per revolution. Most of us don't use 200 steps per revolution. To let the Centroidcnc software work at its optimum, if I've read Keith's posts correctly, he recommen...

Re: Motor torque…..do I need more?

Motor torque depends on the load being driven. A small motor that can spin fast (3,000+ RPM) can be connected directly or to a gearbox. The torque increases depending on ratio of the gearbox. The speed decreases at the same ratio. For example, a 5:1 gearbox would increase torque 5X but it would decr...

Re: 10/1 gears installed!

Let's go back to basics to see what can be done at this point to increase axis speed. If the axis stalls at 200 inch per second with 3,200 steps per revolution, what happens if you set 1,600 steps per revolution? How about 800 steps per revolution? How about 400 steps per revolution? See what happen...

Re: 10/1 gears installed!

Have you checked the math? 200 inch=per-minute = 3.33 inch-per-second. 2.69 revs-per-inch X 10:1 gearbox = 26.9 motor revs per inch. 26.9 X 3.33 = 89.57 motor shaft revs per second. 89.57 motor shaft revs per second X 3,200 steps per revolution = 286,624 steps per second. Can you motors handle that ...

Re: Teknic Clearpath Hard Stop Homing Setup

Clearpath motors can be configured to home each time they are enabled or only one time per power on. If the second option is selected and all motors are powered on at the same time, you could sequence the enabling so that the Z drive was enabled first to move the cutter up and away from the table, a...

Re: Fuses - how many and where?

What I'm doing is installing a fuse or circuit breaker on the input side of each power supply and a fuse or circuit breaker on the output side of the power supply. In addition, I use a fuse on each output circuit that exits the control box. For example, the MDR-20-5 power supply is rated at 0.55A at...
