To get very repeatable homing on a lathe using either DMM ZRI or a proximity or hall effect sensor on the leadscrew pulley, and mechanical switches on the homing end of the axis, here is the setup and the cnct.hom file I used:
Z mechanical limit is on input 1
X mechanical limit is on input 2
Z Prox ...

My goal is to make the mill 5 Axis with full closed loop since RS422 scales with a DRO are already on the machine
I also will install ZRI home with index pulse from the scales/encoders on rotary axis
A and C axis will be driven with A6 Servos, XYZ with the old steppers CL57T and CL86T ...

Wow! That worked! I had to tweak it ...

Re: Hardinge CHNC4 Retrofit
If you do not have precise ZRI home, set part X with T0101 each time after homing..
Set X and Z ref for the tool arm once if the mounting is repeatable.
Probe all tools
Set Z for the current part
Make parts

Acorn Six ZRI Home from scale Index
Here is how I setup ZRI Home on Acorn Six from Index pulse of an Aikron scale.
At the moment if an encoder input is used for a scale, it is not possible to read out the index pulse with CNC12 (Version 5.22)
But it is possible to use Z /Z from the scale to trigger an input with a F53055 Mosfet ...

... is from LeadShine, since they also provide LeadShine Motion Studio with them.
A6 comes with another tuning software (not very well translated) but a lot more functions in the drivers.
I want to try them because of full encoder outputs and OZC Encoder Z-phase open collector output for ZRI home
