Re: Bad Acorn controller

The parameter setting was the problem! Changed it from 300000 down to 100000 and the machine is working fine now.

Still have one issue I don't understand. picking up the part location Acorn keeps applying a tool radius offset to the origin of a part. Does Acorn get the tool radius from the tool ...

Bad Acorn controller <nope, resolved>

I think we have a bad Acorn controller. It was purchased about 2 years ago by the high school FIRST team for our FrankenRouter build. We just got it running for the first time in January of this this year and have not been able to make a single part for our robot as the Z axis has lost position ...

Re: Acorn applying Tool Radius to WCS XY position

I did lots of manual CNC programming using G41,G42 and I completely understand that method.
I did see the ‘approach’ method and that is clearly my issue. This is a router, we use a round pin between the tool and the part so we don’t have to load a probe. I am working with students and want to ...

Acorn applying Tool Radius to WCS XY position

I've destroyed a number of parts now because of what I consider strange behavior. I use Setup/Part to set the X and Y position using a feeler gauge between the part and the tool. Then I enter the actual tool center position using the tool radius + feeler thickness, and press set. Acorn then sets the ...

Re: FrankenRouter

I get why it doesn't work that way, was hoping it didn't. On my machine I have a separate motion PLC (AD BRX) with 3 axis of motion control built in and up to 250Khz. Also has 8 250Kz digital inputs too for reading up to 3 encoders, and 4 analog inputs. I just added a 4 pole relay to switch the 4th ...

Re: FrankenRouter

I found the door safety routine I was looking for. Very nice and simple to implement. A bit of a bummer for using the 4th axis as a spindle. The old PLC with a new CPU can’t do highspeed pulse train. In my home CNC I’m converting to Acorn I have a PLC with analog inputs and highspeed outputs so ...

FrankenRouter

I am a Mentor for Team Mercury 1089 in Hightstown NJ. I am 71 and still work full time designing and building automation machines.

So after five years of interruptions our FrankenRouter built from the Carcasses of machines I built 30 years is finally up and running! It is a 24x28x6 router with a ...

PLC override of rapids

I am building a CNC Router for our FIRST Robotics team. It has a full enclosure and I want to limit the motion to very slow speeds from an input if the door is open. This should allow them to position a tool or finder close to a part, then open the door to use a feeler guage but not accidently get ...

Dimension Drawings for Acorn Components

I am building a CNC Router for our local FIRST Robotics team and I am laying out the control panel. I found mounting dimensions for the Acorn board, but not the relay board or the power supply. Are these available? 3D models would be even better, I have the whole machine modeled in SolidWorks.

Acorn for a FIRST robotics team CNC Router

I am a current user of Mach 3 on my home built CNC mill. I have been a CNC programmer for VMCs in the past too, and operated several different kinds of CNC mills. My machine has a USB motion card and it has worked very well for me for the past 4 years. Now I am building a CNC router for the local ...
