Re: Hernault Somua mill with Acorn and DMM servos

A quick update on this one. I was having repeatability problems, losing a couple of microns on each back-and-forth move. After trying a couple of things, I concluded this was probably electrical noise causing lost steps between the acorn and the DMM drivers. Lots of AC power in that cabinet. I chang...

Hernault Somua mill with Acorn and DMM servos

Hi, My second Acorn project came to life today. This is an old French mill with a travelling column. I bought it partially converted to CNC with DMM 750W servos and DYN2 drives. I gathered an Intel NUC, an Elo touchscreen and a fresh Acorn. Right now homing is set with inductive sensors (already had...

Re: Linz lathe with Clearpath and Acorn = toolroom workhorse

BTW I've been chamfering and threading ORB-8 ports yesterday, meant for AN-8 oring boss adapters. It went very smoothly. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/tVK_P1op-vlsydygwurngWBYIAklr1zSHbuFLidphb9Air2wRok5gKRiasv9wB8EHsxbtzdyjqZxyaqo_-gQYcezSW3lQhNUObJ5DGtuCUW5W5BxUpJgUcV7AW5QvsNYqAZ4tHlaycRF4eXoS...

Linz lathe with Clearpath and Acorn = toolroom workhorse

Hey guys, Here I'm sharing a CNC conversion that starter last summer when I picked up an old gunky lathe for the price of steel in July. It is a French design produced in the 70s and 80s where the slide rests on 65mm chromed steel rods supported only on both ends. The base is a sheetmetal weldment w...

Re: Linz lathe with Clearpath and Acorn

Hi Marty,

Sure, will do.

My mill is under Mach 3 / G540. I'm getting a bigger mill next month, which is due for Acorn.

Re: Linz lathe with Clearpath and Acorn

Hey,

One more to share my success with the encoder and a first threading try.

Re: Linz lathe with Clearpath and Acorn

Thanks, my pleasure. I'm working on what's called an experimental aircraft in the US, here in France limited to 100hp and 2 seats - 450kg max takeoff weight. Just gave CSS and threading a try. I have a Heidenhain ERN1070 3600 lines encoder bought for $100, found out in the process of wiring that it ...

Re: Linz lathe with Clearpath and Acorn

Hey guys. I haven't posted here in a long while but things have moved forward. The lathe is fully operational in turning as I just finished mounting the encoder and got a lathe pro licence. Toolpost spindle is ready. I'll be dealing with the C axis very soon. At first I was set on a double stage pul...

Re: Linz lathe with Clearpath and Acorn

Well, the majority of parts I turn, or will need to turn with this machine, involve radial or axial hole patterns. I don't have a large mill so drilling those holes can get very complicated for me. Besides, it's always better done in the same setup. Worst case scenario, I'll manage to index manually...
