Re: Southwest Industries Prototrak DPM conversion
Marty, I did send my servos off to Scott, who had offered to do the labor to fit new encoders in exchange for doing some R & D testing. Remember, this was 8 years ago. It is MY fault this project has taken so long; Centroid/AjaxCNC has always been prompt with responses to my queries. That said, ...

Re: Southwest Industries Prototrak DPM conversion
I just read through this entire thread again. Embarrassed that I started in 2011 and have not fully commissioned the machine :( I have access to a Haas VF-3SS at my day job, so it is easy to let this one slide. The last time I made a big push (in 2017) I bought the CNC11 software since my demo time ...

Re: Prototrak Knee Mill CNC control system upgrade
I did a conversion on a Southwest Industries DPM bed mill. The control hardware (servos, drives, MX3 CNC control) is the same as your knee mill, I believe. My system used that "TRAK" friction drive position encoder for the X & Y axes. I know that glass scales were an option, I assume t...

I have the generic PLC program...BUT, I'm running windows 7 on a NUC. I have integrated the handheld pendant 4:3 aspect ratio touch screen and wired MPG into a nice console. Not sure it is worth the expense to upgrade to Win10 at this point.

Re: Retro fit Shizuoka B-3V
The basics of what a VFD does is rectify the incoming voltage on all phases to DC and pool it on a DC bus. Then, using high power MOSFETs, they recreate a close approximation of a sine wave from that DC current at a specified frequency. To the best of my knowledge, nearly all VFDs will operate on on...

Re: Anilam (Baldor) DC Servo Power
I will echo Keith's cautions; but that said, I too am running my Magnetek servos above the advertized voltage rating. I initially had a step down transformer but the max rapid travel was well below the speed I had before the retrofit on my Southwest Industries Trak DPM. They used an odd configuratio...

Re: Kitamura Mycenter 1/485 Rebuild and Retrofit Diary
Thanks! And youre welcome. Part of the reason I wanted to document this is that I'd like to see more of these older, very well built, machines being retrofitted as opposed to scrapped. I bought this machine for $900. By the time Im done I expect costs to be around $6500. When I consider many hobbyi...

Re: Rotary table for lathe tool turret
I seriously doubt you will get results you are satisfied with. CNC lathes with tool turrets use a mechanism called a curvic coupler that precisely and repeatedly locks the turret solid to the turret wedge. They are EXTREMELY rigid. You are already fighting rigidity issues in lathes on a regular basi...
