In the end I was able to get some Panasonic stock from the supplier of my previous kit used on my other mill.

I will have 2 x 0.75KW and 1 x 1.0KW available. Ill likely install the 1.0KW setup on my other mill (home made machine) and then have the same three for the Bridgeport.

Managed to get two of these 800 x 600 x 300 enclosures for fairly cheap. Perfect for this (I was thinking to use the original box), but this will work too.

Testing a layout. Any thoughts / concerns with what I am proposing? The VFD will be placed externally.

Made progress today, both X and Y motors mounted (not perfect but will do - would prefer to do some steel plates later.

Making progress, wired up most of the controls, quick test run with some existing / included code. Axis are not calibration yet (distance etc), wanted to check movement. It sounds like the X belt is fouling, will need to sort.

I am looking at spindle options, the current setup seems a bit low powered and I'd like to be able to get faster RPM and ideally rigid tapping etc.

http://gskcnc.com/Support/DA98B_ACDriver.pdf is the driver in question, they do a 2.6KW unit that might suit. Page 25 refers ...

They offer a 'speed control' input of -10 to +10V. Could I use this with Acorn? As far as I am aware, Acorn wants 0-10V, unless it can accept negative and knows this is reverse?

Then, in terms of encoder output from the drive or from the motor, this has typical A, A-, B, B- and Z (or I if you prefer), and Z-. There is no index pulse from what I can tell.

Is it possible to use this with Acorn?

Z is the same as index so you should be good there. As for converting 0-10V and direction into +-10V, I haven't tired this but it should work:

SW is your reverse signal. When it is open, the op amp has a gain of 1. When it is closed, the gain is -1. You will need to supply the op amp with at least +-12 volts (+-36 max).
