Spindle Speed Encoder
I have a R2E3 Bridgeport and I fitted a cnc4pc index pulse board to the top of the spindle the card shows a pulse and i've checked it with a fluke multi meter and the htz changes with the speed and the output voltage is aprox 5v. I tried connecting it to mach 3 via the db25 parallel port pin # 15 with no success. I need this to work so that I can use spindle speed feedback for more accurate tapping. I want to use IPR instead of IPM. I think since i'm using an mpu11 with dc3io motion controll card that i should be able to connect the index pulse card from cnc4pc through the mpu11 card encoder input but i havn't a clue how to do that since the index card only has a single output and ground to represent the pulse. I'm having no luck hunting down reference material to aid me. If someone could help that would be great.

Hi. I'm not totally in the know with all of your hardware, but I can tell you that a $25 OMRON encoder works awesome with the Centroid acorn. Extremely accurate spindle feedback for tapping and threading.

Re: Spindle Speed Encoder
You need a complete encoder: one with A, B and Z channels.
Since you want to connect it to a Centroid control, it needs to have differential outputs: A, /A, B, /B, Z, /Z plus 5VDC and COM.
Most commonly, people use 1024-line encoders for spindles, but anything from a few hundred lines to a few thousand lines should work fine. One line is not enough.
The Omron encoder in francoCNC's post meets the requirements nicely. So will the encoders offered by Centroid, and any of the 5V line-driver incremental encoders offered by Automation Direct.

Re: Spindle Speed Encoder
I'm curious about this encoder. Only place I found it for $25 was on eBay from a Chinese vendor. Typically I buy from Mouser or Digikey for my electronics needs. At both these locations this encoder ran about $350 which obviously is a huge difference. Am I overlooking something here as the part numbers matched up? Or are these just Chinese knockoffs? Just curious as I'll be adding a spindle encoder to an Emco lathe soon and the Acorn board along with TurnPro soon. But I'd rather find authentic parts. Not trying to knock your post or video, great job, just wanted to make sure I am looking at the same encoder as you are (as obviously the huge price difference makes me worry).
Thanks.

i believe the ebay 25$ ones are knock offs. i have one on my lathe and it works greatThreedj16 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 22, 2018 1:32 amI'm curious about this encoder. Re: Spindle Speed Encoder
I seem to get this hosed up a lot. The software on my mill uses a quadrature encoder but counts the rise and fall on both channels, therefore 1000PPR is 4000CPR. So by the same logic, from what I've read, using a differential quad encoder the Acorn board is using A, A-, B, B- to achieve the same 4x of the PPR...correct? So looking at this encoder linked below, I should be covered for a spindle encoder? 1200PPR = 4800CPR?

I looked the Omron encoders on ebay, but seems they will all take forever to get here (since they were all sold from different vendors in China). Anyone found a US source for these that wasn't $350? Would like a 2kPPR encoder, but just curious if it's really needed on a lathe spindle? Any sub 100 buck options out there someone may recommend which I could receive by next week?

Re: Spindle Speed Encoder
Must have filtered some of the encoders out a bit on Automation direct. I did finally find a 2000PPR.

Re: Spindle Speed Encoder
The Koyo encoders from Automation Direct, in your links, should work just fine.

Re: Spindle Speed Encoder
Just got the new lathe in, man it's beautiful for it's age. Anyway, anyone have an idea about the usability of this old optical encoder? Looks pretty state of the art for the 1980s. It has at least 4 wires coming off, possibly 2 more for power (hard to tell until i can take it all apart).
I think the part with open slots were for the zero index. They don't look broken out.
Thanks!
