DM45 Mill will not home (Resolved)

Post by Mike Brown »

Thanks for the forum. I purchased a DM45 mill from AjaxCNC. I had some initial issues with the CMOS battery frequently running down which I fixed by rewiring the PC power supply on all the time and adding a start button. The mill will not home. It boots properly but when I press the start button to begin the homing process the X jumps negative a short distance and then I get a 410 X axis (1) position error. All three over travel switches are working correctly. The M92 Z command is first up in the homing process but the Z axis never moves, just the X. Suggestions?

Thanks for any help or insight that can be provided.

Has it ever worked right since you have owned it? I.e., is the X axis runaway problem a recent development, or has it done that since you bought the machine (perhaps used, perhaps recently)?

Typically, a jump and "410 position error" as soon as an axis is commanded is a sign that the servo motor power is connected backwards, and you need to reverse the plus (red) and minus (black) power leads to that motor. But those things don't change themselves spontaneously. Someone would have to have disconnected the wires, then reconnected them in the wrong order.

Another possibility is that you have shorted FETs on the servo drive, and will need to send the drive in for repair.

Thanks for the reply. The machine has worked properly for about 8 years. This is a new symptom. I will check the X axis drive.

If I disconnect the X axis servo motor I assume that the Z would go ahead and home correctly then error out when the X axis does not move. Is this a correct assumption?

You didn't move the machine, change any wiring or cables did you? You just went from one day it was working to the next it was not?
Yes, that's what should happen.
Also, please post a fresh report

The machine wasn't moved or anything changed. It was working with no problems, shut down normally, the next time that it was powered up it failed to home.

Can you post a fresh report? F7 Utilities F7 Create Report
Have no idea what version of CNC software you are running, so we can't give you suggestions.
IN the report there is a message log that is helpful as well

I will post a fresh report tomorrow. Last night I did disconnect the X axis motor and the Z axis did home normally. With the X axis motor disconnected it had an error that the X axis did not move as expected.
