"Need Help Troubleshooting Nema 23 Stepper Motor with DM556T Driver"

Post by Gary Slicer »

Hello fellow CNC enthusiasts,

I'm currently facing a perplexing issue with my setup, and I'm hoping the community can shed some light on the problem. I've been following the installation manual for my Nema 23 stepper motor and DM556T driver step by step. Everything appears to be set up correctly, but I'm unable to get the motor to turn.

Here are the details of my setup:

Nema 23 stepper motor
DM556T driver
Power supply voltage: 110V AC to 48V DC Converter 480W 10A
CNC controller: Centroid Acorn

I've diligently followed the manual's instructions for wiring connections and settings configuration. The DM556T driver has LED indicators, and I've checked to see if they display any specific patterns or colors that might indicate an issue. (the light is solid green)

So far, I've tried different microstep configurations, including the "LK 5056" schematic hookup with a 1600, 2000 and 400 microstep configuration and the "Leadshine DM series" schematic with the recommended 3200 microstep configuration. Despite my efforts, the motor remains unresponsive.

When I attempt to move the motor with the software jogger, it doesn't make any noise, vibrate, or show any signs of motion. I've thoroughly checked for loose connections and ensured that the motor wires are connected correctly. I've also verified the power supply voltage. the motor gets warm when the system is recieving power and when the e-stop is pressed the motor becomes cold and the shaft become easier to move.

I'm reaching out to the community for guidance and advice. Has anyone successfully used a Nema 23 motor with the DM556T driver before? Are there specific settings or connections I should double-check? If you have any insights or suggestions, I'd greatly appreciate your help.

For your reference, here's is my google photo album of my current setup :: https://photos.app.goo.gl/k91rGiN7smc7SXXm9

Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide. Your expertise will be invaluable in helping me resolve this issue and get my CNC system up and running.

Best regards,

Gary Slicer

is this a plasma machine build?

if so, use the plasma CNC software.

did you press write settings to CNC control in the Wizard? doesn't look like it? :D

Thanks,I'll unplug the enable wires as soon as i get home from work and try it out. Should I be using the LK 5056 schematics?

No I plan on building it as a regular cnc machine and then later after i start making money I can afford to build a Plasma cutter and laser on it also.
When you say "write settings" are you referring to the bottom at the bottom right screen when you are selecting you drive type?

I just in plugged the enable wire and nothing has changed. The motor is still unresponsive but reacting to the e-stop fine. My power supply screen says it’s out putting 0amps and 44 volts. I’ve run this Dm556T and Nema 23 motor wired to the KL schematic for both 1600 and 200 steps per revolution and it’s still not working. I also ran it with the “lead shire DM “ written to the cnc controller with 3200 steps per rev. I’ll take more pictures of my set up but I would really appreciate any further help on figuring out how to get this functional

Did you put the switch on the end of the driver to 5v logic? They come shipped in the 24v position and won't work that way.

Thank you very much Ken!! That was exactly what was stopping it from turning the motor! I’m so glad you said that because I would have never noticed that switch was even there. Than you so much :)
