Hello all,
I am currently working on transforming a PM-940V into a CNC using Clear path servos, new ball screws and an acorn CNC controller. I am wondering if adding an encoder to the spindle at a later date after installing everything would be as easy (relatively) as coupling the encoder to the motor and plugging into the acorn. No full system disassembly required (other than the spindle motor and small stuff around it). From watching videos it seems to be the case but I didn't want to speculate.
Still have not received the controller yet and am wondering if I should install the encoder now or I can wait until later.
Thanks!

Gmoney,
I'm no expert or even close but I would think mounting the encoder on the 3phase motor would be no good.
Encoders do not like magnets or noisy environments plus a belt slipping situation may come into play also.
Maybe someone with more knowledge than me can correct me if I'm wrong. I think mounting on the spindle is a better option.
I'm planning on installing one on my 940 in the future so keep us posted.

The Encoder needs to be connected 1:1 to the spindle to make rigid tapping work.
I mounted my with a small timing belt.
