Migrate from Acorn Mill to Acorn Router

Post by Ryan64 »

Is there anyway to change my Mill install to a Router install?

I'm about to migrate from 4.86 to 5.06. I saw there was an drop down option when choosing the type of install, is it possible to switch during the update or does my license key dictate what option I choose? I original purchased a Mill license back when Mill and Lathe was the only option.

If you already bought a mill license then you have to install the mill version again.

Don't worry though, it's the exact same software just with different buttons on the VCP. You can make the mill version look just like the router version and visa-versa. Very simple to do, there's an entire manual just for customizing the VCP and how to make it look however you want.

Here's a link to the VCP manual if you need it.

They will swap the license for free if you bought it before there was a "router" version.

Thanks Shawn. I customized mine last year but forgot the process so I'll be looking over it again after the update.

Thank Ken. Are there any quality of use difference beside the layout of the VCP? I'm aiming to add plasma with their height controller in the future, do you know if the mill license will support this?

I have not used plasma and don't know that answer. The mill works fine for router use, but the buttons are different. You can change buttons if it bothers you.

Before you update just be sure to create a report and you can use your current VCP layout as a jumping off point. DO NOT restore your old report to 5.06, it will mess things up. Key in all your parameters by hand.

After that you can copy over your old skin file and buttons and get all your current buttons back. Then you can add or change the VCP from there. Again, this is all very easy to do.

Plasma is yet another license by itself.

I also have the mill version that i bought prior to the Router release. Is there a File with the router VCP I can just swap mine out with (I'm not ready to create and modify my own VCP). The router VCP looks like it already has 99% of everything I would need.

My VCP is full custom and I cannot find the stock, OEM router skin file on my machine here at home. I may have finally deleted it knowing I wouldn't use it again. I'm sure someone here that is just using the stock router VCP can share the skin file with you. The VCP is not that hard to customize if you just follow the VCP manual.
