Stepper motor upgrade

Post by midy »

I'm going to upgrade my lathe to either servos or hybrid steppers with encoders. Are decent hybrid steppers as good as servos, or is it the case that if you can afford servos then do so? Also I'm in England so anybody here recommend suppliers of steppers and servos?

cheers

I have good luck with buying Yaskawa servos and other brands from Alibaba. It's much more affordable than what is offered in the US. What size and kw servo are you interested in?

Good question, I'm not sure how to match the correct power etc when changing from stepper to servo. I'm currently using 8Nm nema 34 steppers and am still trying to decide on the correct wattage of servo. Just looking online and can't find a source to compare the 2 as far as power goes. I'm sure there will be some sort rule of thumb type thing when swapping the 2? Would definitely want to stick to nema 34 to keep the work to minimum.

with NEMA 34, there are not much options, most servos have a 60 or 80 mm frame in this power range.

Clearpath makes them in this size, Kollmorgen to, but a different price range.

I'm looking at the JMC's which do a nema 34, they have built on driver, just not sure if they are powerful enough?

not sure, I do not use integrated servos, or steppers....

... max torque is under the 220V versions and with power supply they are even more expensive.
