Acorn board up in smoke and z axis no longer works

Post by Toysrfun »

After the last couple days running smoothly. During a digitizing routing on a more complex part I heard a sizzle and saw smoke :o coming from the cabinet. Immediately shut power down, opened the cabinet, examined everything, and I couldn’t see anything obvious that stood out. I turned the power back on and opened cnc12 while no further issues occurred i noticed upon jogging all axis that the z axis no longer works. So what am I supposed to to now? How do I get the board repaired or replaced? Can i transfer my bundle to another board I have here while I get the issue resolved? I have several products I need to make and get out the door so if any way to get this resolved ASAP that would be helpful.

Looks like I’m 13 months since purchase despite being too busy to finish the build until a month ago. The reality of anything getting warrantied for electronics is usually never happening anyways so all I would like is someone to help transfer my digitizing bundle over to my pro board if possible and we can get the licensing all straightened out over the phone. I can make it so we can quick swap boards and use any prepaid time I may have left for licensing fixes.

I found the information on the centroid website and ended up buying another board and requested a license transfer to it. Hopefully that’s all that’s needed.

For anyone else who runs into this issue here is a link if you have a warranty https://www.centroidcnc.com/centroid_di ... ranty.html

I presume if out of warranty you just buy the board and request transfer of link. Hoping that helps and hoping no more issues after it was all finally running smoothly.

Found the problem. It’s a .37 gate driver part number tbd62083afg

I ordered a gate driver to arrive in 2 days. If it fixes my board I’m assuming we can get all the licensing straightened out since I ordered a new board. I have another project I can use another board if it is savable. Mod the software loaded onto the beaglebone so I could just swap that board over? Makes sense that’s how they’re programmed. If so let me know that makes for a quick fix

I’m kinda back up and running. My licenses won’t work. I swapped the beaglebone lbone over to another centeoid bob thinking the license was on the beaglebone but apparently not. So now I’m on acorn free. Any help would be fantastic

The license is tied to a specific beaglebone/acorn combo. Did you manage to repair your first Acorn?

please post a report.zip file..
the license is keyed to the bbg, if you put in a new bbg, i'll need to generate another license file. i need a fresh report.zip to do that.
Acorn is very reliable.. if it smoked.. then its a wiring issue.

Toysrfun,
You really should clean up your wiring and build a proper control cabinet.
Acorn, power supplies Axis drives etc INSIDE a control cabinet.
ALL Grounds and cable shields tied to ONE point IN the cabinet.
Step and direction signals should be in a shielded cable from Acorn to the drive to help ensure no noise is induced in the pulse stream (could lead to added or missed steps.)

I'm concerned you are going to continue problems until you address this. At best machine performance issues, at worst damage to control components

Gary created a video, showing tips on building a control cabinet:
