I'd like to double-check on how to set a lathe threading tool. I didn't see anything (well, anything obvious anyway ) in the manual specifically about setting threading tools. I'll assume one sets the X just like the rest of the tools, by touching off a turned diameter. That one I'm reasonably sure of.
The one that's a bit more of a guess is the Z. I'm assuming one lines up the tip of the insert with the turned face, so that the centerline of the tip is even with the reference face?

Depends how you program it. On our mazak machines the flat face of the thread insert is touched off against tool setter. That way if u have a 30mm shoulder u can program the threading op up to 30mm without collision

I program with the edge of the insert as well. Its safer. By the time your threading the part is usually complete. Bad time for running a tool into the shoulder behind the thread.

On a similar note, I was looking at my library-to-be and thought the same thing of my 1/4" round profiling bit, and the square-insert bit, both of which basically point straight in. How would you treat those?

I believe the radius cutter will likely need to be programmed off of the center as is the case with a triangular type insert with a radius.
