Dual Voltage Power Supply with Acorn?

Post by Gary Campbell »

Change your vote if you wish

Based on a number of threads that show adding a 5vdc logic power supply to comply with a number of the options and schematics that require them, I was wondering if the dual voltage power supply, if added to the Acorn package, would be a benefit to the majority? Assume that the package price would affect the change.

Personally, since I use drives that require 5v logic and output signals, I have added an additional power supply to one machine, and have purchased a Meanwell RD-65B for 2 others. What say you? Past and future purchasers included please.

Poll change to reflect the obvious choice of not providing them at all. I would suggest to Keith that if you think a single option will eliminate user screw-ups, get out of the DIY market!

we shipped out dual voltage supplies with some of the very first kits...
guess what happened?.....
users hooked up the wrong voltage to the Acorn board.
so decision was made to keep the kit as simple as possible and not try to guess what the customer may or may not need for the types of drives he chooses and we even consider not including a power supply at all!:-)

Personally, I would prefer that you didn't supply PSU and reduce cost.
Reason being that for lot of machines I build require more than 1amp PSU for other things so still need another PSU. Being Isolated isn't big issue for me but space can be tight in control box so single large PSU suits better. Also Prefer DIn rail mount PSU.

I would prefer a dual supply, or no supply.

I haven't seen a solution yet that doesn't need 5 volts. I paid for the 24v supply but had to shelve it and had to buy another anyway.
If you have an encoder you need 5 volts...

I too had to purchase a dual volt power supply and now have the original floating around as a spare. So for me it would have been benedicial to have it supplied. However 3 options when purchasing would probably be ideal, no power supply, 24v, 24&5.

I plan on purchasing another acorn to control this desktop lathe I will be getting soon and would probably just run some cheap steppers so if I can order an acorn without a power supply I can use my spare.

I think if someone can’t figure out the dual voltage power supply then they probably shouldn’t be playing with a acorn in the first place.

I think this is the correct approach, and gives the end user all the options they want, and need, without incurring additional cost or wasted parts (the included PSU). Get the Acorn below $300!

This is probably the best idea.

LOL!

The first purchase made sense to me to have the supply.I didn't know what I was doing...
If I buy another, what will I do with two unused power supplies?
