Continuation of my spindle and C axis quest: Dilemma

Post by frijoli »

So as not to go down another rabbit hole. I have not connected anything yet and just trying to sort out how it will work.

My current spindle drive(DYN4 with unique firmware) does not have separate forward and reverse input signal. It uses a single pin(PIN14) to switch directions. When the pin is HIGH it goes forward, when the pin is LOW it reverses.
So if have an analog input voltage, it spins the motor. (hence this rabbit hole: viewtopic.php?f=60&t=1308)

So how do I NOT run the motor if I always have voltage on the analog output from Acorn?
My thought is to run the analog signal that through a relay to block it from the drive.
When I want to run the motor forward I turn on that relay and an output from Acorn to PIN14 on the drive , it will go forward at the commanded speed, and then I can reverse it through PIN14 on the drive.
OFF would be to turn off the relay.
This seems to be the best solution for me currently. Anything wrong with this?

Hi Clay,
I’m not going to be able to help (naturally  ) but I’ve been wondering the same thing, well sort of. I have a Dyn4 as well and have been puzzling over how to wire it up. Michael at DMM sent me a diagram but it doesn’t seem to address reversing the motor.

Can you send me the drawing? I am close to solving mine but need some reassurance. lol

You have a lot more wires in your drawing. What they sent me isn’t going to help, unfortunately.

Do you not have an enable circuit?

No, not for the spindle drive.
The way this is set-up, when enable is on, the drive is in step/direction mode. When not enable it runs as soon as it has an analog signal.

You're right. This does not address the reversing Issue. I will call them again Tuesday and ask about both of these issues.

The way I see it, enable is enable. What difference does it make the signal input it is in?
Have you tried to take pin 15 low?

The enable pin on this drive acts as a switch.
This drive has dual modes. pulse|direction and speed. The enable pin switches from one mode to the other.
DYN4 inputs 2.JPG

I want to use the drive as my spindle and my C axis.
As you can see, you can make either mode default, and when I turn the enable connection on at the drive it will switch to the other mode.
So while theoretically I can have my C axis and my spindle drive, I have inadvertently created other logic problems.
I'm determined to make this work, just don't know how yet.

Temporarily I just want my spindle motor to work, which led me to the question how do I reverse direction and stop the spindle when the analog signal is always on, and I only have one pin for direction.

I am going to go back to DMM to see what other option is available for doing this.
