Animatics Smart Motors?

Post by blockwire »

Hi all, I'm new to the board. I'm just doing some high-level evaluation to see if one of the Centroid DIY controllers is a good option to upgrade my CNC router that's running Animatics Smart Motors (SM3430D v.4.15C Mfr Date 2003). The router is a 3-axis gantry-style with X, X-slave, Y and Z. All 4 motor cables run to the controller box where yellow, blue and black wires are currently tied into the USB-to-Serial cables coming from 2 USB Ports on the PC. It's been 8 years since I built it and I'm still a little foggy on the proprietary nature of these motors. At that time, I followed the wiring diagram and it mostly worked, so I stuck with it.

The software I am using is called JenCNC and was designed to run just Animatics motors. It's similar to Mach3 in many ways, but this older version lacks the features of the newer Mach versions. I was told at the time, it was the only way to run these motors. I can't update that software because they tell me the newer versions are not backward compatible with my older motors (v.4.15C). It always sounded fishy to me and I'd like to clear the fog. It seems that if other integrated servos can run with these controllers, maybe they'll work for me. These servos are still good and I hate to throw out them out if I can get some more mileage out of them. Anyone have experience with Animatics or thoughts on how to determine if it's worth a try?

I have used a couple different versions of these. I have never seen one with straight step and direction.

They are standard nema mounts though.

Sounds like a good time to do a complete control upgrade with new motors and motor drives

I agree with Marty and you may want to contact Teknic or DMM-TECH and let them know what you have and what they suggest as a replacement.
