G0678 CNC Conversion Thread

Post by Dave_C »

I bit the bullet today and bought the Grizzly G0678 mill to do my Centroid Acorn conversion! I'll share the build pics on this thread for anyone interested in doing the same project or something similar. In this case you need a mill to make mill parts and I already have a mill with good reliable DRO's so I'm off and running as soon as I get the mill.

The machine won't be here till mid Dec of 2017 so stay tuned for further development.

Centroid Acorn!

I've been a fan of Centorid for years, I've just never had the privilege of owning one or using one. I've watched lots of videos from CNC Keith!

I actually have a nephew who runs 6 Atrump machines that have Centroid Controllers and he loves them. In fact just last night we started a conversation regarding a new tool they are going to design and it may end up having an Acorn controller at the heart of it. We'll see!

The wife says I can't rush through this build, it has to last me for awhile. (not sure how she defines awhile, LOL)

I have an Atrump at work. I wasn't familiar with Centroid until we started looking for a new CNC mill and bought it. Glad I bought it, because it's really easy to operate.
That's what made me pull the trigger on the Acorn lathe project. It's pretty special to have a company like Centroid with a proven CNC interface supporting DIY at this level!

Oh boy! Grizzly called today, the mill is here. So off to the warehouse to pay for it, over to U-Haul to rent the truck, back to the warehouse to load the mill then home to disassemble as much of the weight as possible to the wife and I can get it into the garage for now.

2 1/2 hours later, the mill is in the garage! I'm actually pretty impressed with this mill as I see hand scrapped ways when I took the table off!

Lots of cleaning to do so the disassemble with make that a lot easier.

Step 1 is done, just getting this part done was a major accomplishemnt.

Step 2, stop and have some coffee!

Step 3, now move all the parts to the shop, but no rush, no truck to return, plenty of time and many methods and tools available.

Moving day!

The wife and I were able to move the last of the mill into the shop today with the help of my home made low boy cart and the lawn mower. Then just lifted it off of the cart and placed it in its new home.

Now to start the cleaning and reassembly with all the new modifications that will make it CNC.

Almost time to order the Acorn as the control panel is well on its way to being together!

Later,

Dave C.

Marty,

Yeah, I don't really have anything much to do this winter so this is my project for a little while. This isn't going to be all that big of a job as this mill lends itself to an easy conversion. I'm building the control panel right now and I just need to stop and order my Centroid stuff so I can mount the acorn board on the control panel back plane.

I spent many hours going over all the drawings from Centroid before I even bought the mill even did the same with the Grizzly G0678 so I could see how to take it apart and to make sure I had clearance for the ball nut mounts.

I'm actually having a ball and enjoying this! I'll post a pic as soon as the panel has all the parts in it.
