Laptop below recommended specs?

Post by ScotY » Sat Sep 23, 2017 10:41 pm

Hello,

I'm about to order an Acorn and am wondering if a laptop running Windows 10 with a single thread benchmark in the 900 range will run the CNC software. I'm new to all this CNC stuff and this will be installed on a mini mill so my needs are very basic.

Thanks!
Scot

Anyone? I guess everyone has been enjoying their weekend.:D I just placed my order for the Acorn package. I'm hoping my laptop will work until I have the funds to buy a dedicated PC for it.

Well, we have the minimum specs for a reason but there is always some leeway. You will have to try it to find out.

With Windows 10, Cortana and the "Anti Malware.exe" can use up ALOT of system resources so you may want to google ways to eliminate/gain control of when they run. Also, I've noticed that a rotational HD on Windows 10 is 20-30 times slower than an SSD. The best way to increase performance on a Windows 10 system is to use an SSD.

Lastly, laptops can be especially troublesome because of all the power management features. Make you disable all CPU throttling etc.. Google laptops and CNC.

This is what I bought and works well so far, link below. It was 240 dollars shipped includes solid state drive, a second hard drive- says 1TB (mine came with 2TB), windows 10 pro, and CPU meets minimum requirements. Amazon prime no less. Best

HP Elite 8200 Small Form Factor High Performance Flagship Business Desktop (Intel i3-2100 up to 3.1 GHz Processor, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD + 120GB SSD, DVD, Windows 10 Professional) (Certified Refurbished) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074N9XBCQ/re ... 7zb25Q2GKR
