Is positioning mode or torque mode better?

I have two ABB Microflex drives and motors that I will be connecting to an Oak controller on a small Hardinge lathe. The Microflex can run in positioning (step/dir) , torque/current (0-10V), or velocity (0-10V) modes. Which mode will give me the better results? Will it make a difference if in the future I add glass scale feedback to the X-axis?

the oak board doesn't output step and direction..so that's out.
i'd go for the velocity mode.
what is your goal with the hardinge? super accurate production machine? or occasional use in the garage?

... but if you do want to run positioning mode, the Oak will output a pulse train signal (A and B channels). Many drives will accept that as an alternative to step and direction.

I don't know why I didn't notice that. I had originally intended to hook it up in velocity mode and noticed the microflex drive had multiple modes and I remember seeing the Oak board had multiple modes, just didn't bother to check if the multiple modes matched. Sorry for wasting your time.

In answer to your question, this will be for a super accurate prototyping machine/short-run production.
