Hey folks,
Would like to retrofit our Mori Seiki BB lathe (similar to SL1) with Centroid. It had a DC spindle motor, so we purchased an AC one Yaskawa EEA-IKM (the one used in SL1). Upon arrival it turns it has a few sets of wiring--two sets of thicker 3 wires, and also it has a multi Pole Resolver TDIA 72B. Could not find any info on either, so the question is it possible to connect this thing to VFD, or does it need a special drive?
Thanks, M

Marik,
Unfortunately, without any information about the VFD that you are using, it is hard to say whether that motor will work. The only information that I could find for that Yaskawa EEA-IKM spindle motor was from Yaskawa's website concerning the Yaskawa VS-626MTII controller https://www.yaskawa.com/pycprd/support/ ... 46/EEA-IKM. If you look at page 14 of the service manual, you will see the cables coming from that motor. The one set of 3 wires is for the U, V, and W phases of the motor. The other set of 3 wires is for a cooling fan that is mounted onto the motor. The last set of cables is for the resolver as well as a thermal overload switch. Unfortunately, I do not know if the Yaskawa VS-626MTII controller is needed in order to run the Yaskawa EEA-IKM spindle motor. As long as your VFD can accept the resolver signals, I would try installing it to see if it will work. You may need to modify some parameters on the VFD in order to get the spindle motor properly tuned.

Re: Mori Seiki BB spindle motor with Centroid
Bardac makes a pretty good DC motor controller several centroid retrofitters have used them in the case where a machine has a DC motor and is too cost prohibitive to refit with an AC motor.
