Depth setups in Z? Newb w/ a fowler Z depth height

Post by countryguy »

Hi guy's. the Mill upgrade's been great so far. Running several months now and love the simplicity . I've become tired of trying to set my endmill onto the material Ztop to set 0. So I bought this:

would you tell me in general on the software how I'd go about putting something like this into practical use? Point me over to a section of the manuals? Thanks. CG.

hello. i'm wondering how you are using the tool library... are touching off each tool every time for each new program? (a common newbie misunderstanding)
or are you following the tool library method taught in the training videos? since if you follow that method..it minimizes tool touch off's..etc..
that being said you can employ centroid's TT-1,tt02 and the DP4 probe to make both tool height setting and part z setting much faster and accurate (and fun)
other variations using other types of tools are possible as well.

Yeah - I'm touching off every single time. I figured since the knee was not constant, I was not sure how to really make all that part work. Just rushing and repeating rather than learning more. I'll get back on that horse as my way sucks. ;-) I have a knee mill so I need to finish watching that Video as well.

I know you guys have the neat tools. I have the way less than neat tool budget right now. So the Z Fowler seemed OK w/ the big ENCO sale.

Going to watch a video.... Thanks,
JJ

If you use the procedure recommended in the video, then your tool length offsets are all measured in comparison to your Reference Tool (whatever that may be).

If your Reference Tool is a physical tool (or token piece of drill rod) in a tool holder, it does not change when you move the knee. Therefore you don't need to re-measure your tools just because you moved the knee or put a different workpiece on the table.

You do, of course, need to reset your Z axis Part Zero location whenever you move the knee or change workpieces, but that is separate from your tool length offsets.
