Will my Millport setup work with an Allinone setup

Post by bloomingtonmike »

Newbie with a Millport Rhino 1 style mill here - Miek Heidrick.

I have built stepper based CNC routers before. I recently got this metal Millport CNC mill and it has SEM servos on it with encoders and a Dynapath Delta 20 controller that is non functional (lights but no displayand a high pitched whine).
I have a Mach License already and a WJ200 3hp VFD (also have a 5hp RPC converter in the shop). I am considering the AllinOne Ajax setup using this VFD and Mach.

How can I be sure my servos will work with the allinone. Here is the info on the servose and encoaders. I am very new to this so go easy on me.

Sem X Type MT 30R4-42 serial NoE 8389, Constant Stall torque 28lbs in tenv, Max RPM 3200 volts 135, pulse amps 52, tacho 7 volts/1000 RPM, insul F, Perm Magnet DC Servo motor F87-70888, serial number 18920

The encoaders say ERO120 10000 F10, IDN 220 1550, sn 1551170, Dr Johannes HEidrnhain, D-8225 Tanreit MAde in West Germany.

I have been trying to understand all the parts in my controller - I see a couple transformers - one from 220/440 to 110 and another from 220/440 to 72V.
I am not sure exactly what parts I will need to run the servos. They are pretty different than the Gecko G540 and 425oz steppers I use on my cnc router setup.

Here are few pictures. Any advice on how to test my components so that i know I will have parts that will work with the ajax before I drop the $199 on the mach setup or $2400 on the centroid setup? This is just a hobby of mine so funds are felt when spent at this level of coin.

Mike

Those servos should be no problem for the ALLIN1DC, which can handle up to 40in-lb, 180VDC, 15amp servos. From what I can find on your encoders they should be able to carry a quadrature differential signal and therefore compatible with our control. In terms of the retrofit you will want to keep your existing step-down transformers. Try and trace the power to your existing drives. Whatever is going into those drives is what you will have going into the ALLIN1DC drives. The voltage will be something a bit less than the 135VDC max your servos can handle. I have attached a general schematic showing a typical setup using a step down transformer and our ALLIN1DC. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I am ready to go with Ajax if I can confirm 100% these encoaders will work with teh All In One. Is there any advice for me to help figure that out?

this retrofit is a no brain-er.. about as easy as you can get! go for it.

How many wires do you have coming out of your encoders or how many pins do you have on the connector side? This post has a lot of information on encoder basics http://www.ajaxcnc.com/ajaxbb/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=4 .I can confirm that other customers have used the same model of encoder on their retrofits.

Looks like 8 wires are wired to teh connector - connector has 10 pins

Main plug on the motor/encoder has 16 pins - 8 in a circle around outside, center two large pins and two smaller pins.

Just ordered the AllInOne $1859 Mach setup. Once I get it installed and paid for I will check into buying the Centroid Software.

great.. the All-in-one-DC is best way to go for this machine... you'll still want to use the centroid software for setup even if you want to run mach.. the centroid setup is easier. and..fyi..most guys end up going with the centroid software for all around ease of use and rock solid operation. the demo version of the CENTROID software is included with the All-in-one-DC kit.

Good move mike.
You are going to have to find a pinout for those encoders.
If you can't, all is not lost. You can get 1000 line encoders that will work fine and they don't cost an arm and a leg.

Good luck.
