What makes a DC motor unidirectional?

Post by frijoli »

I saw a brushed DC motor that says clockwise direction.
It is a two wire unit; red and black. Is it the shape of the brushes, or is it rectified in some manner?

I would apply voltage to the leads, positive to red, negative to black. Observe the motor.
Then apply positive to black and negative to red. Observe the motor.

Do you know the terminal voltage of the motor?
Use a +12V power supply with adequate current for testing. You should be ok.

Thanks Marty. I don't own it. I was looking through some stash at work.
I was just curious as I had not seen one before.
A guy I work with said the brushes are installed at an angle. That's all I know.

The commutator could also be set to have some lead angle. This would allow the motor to run faster in one direction.
